After a reign of thirty years, Emperor Akihito has abdicated the Chrysanthemum Throne of Japan. The Abdication Ceremony took place in the Seiden-Matsu-no-Ma, a room reserved for extremely important events in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan in front of about 300 people including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Empress Michiko, Crown Prince Naruhito, and Crown Princess Masako. Prime Minister Shinzō Abe gave a speech outlining the reason for the abdication and expressed his gratitude to Emperor Akihito. Then Emperor Akihito gave his final speech as Emperor. Tomorrow, May 1, 2019, Crown Prince Naruhito ascends the Chrysanthemum Throne, a new era called Reiwa begins, and the Presentation of the Three Sacred Treasures ceremony will take place.
