The Marshall of the Grand Ducal Court of Luxembourg announced on December 6, 2019: “Their Royal Highnesses The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess are immensely pleased to announce that the Hereditary Grand Duke and Hereditary Grand Duchess are expecting their first child. The birth is scheduled for May. The Grand Duke, the Grand Duchess and the members of both families are delighted with their great joy.”
Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and the former Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy, who was born in and grew up in Belgium, were married civilly on October 19, 2012, and religiously on October 20, 2012. See Unofficial Royalty: Wedding of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy.
The child will be second in the line of succession to the throne of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg after his or her father. As of June 2011, beginning with the children of the current Grand Duke Henri, Luxembourg’s line of succession has been cognatic (absolute) primogeniture in which the succession passes to the eldest child of the sovereign regardless of gender, males and females have equal succession rights. This means that the expected child will remain second in the line of succession even if the child is a girl and has younger brothers.
